Nigerian gas suppliers have expressed strong appreciation for the Presidency’s recent strides in resolving the sector’s multi-trillion naira legacy debts, even as a major pipeline outage triggers temporary power supply disruptions nationwide.
This as Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu, says the Federal Government has taken decisive steps to address persistent gas supply challenges affecting electricity generation.
Adelabu expressed optimism that these interventions were already yielding gradual improvements and would significantly enhance power supply in the near future.
According to the Minister “Concrete measures are being implemented to ensure more reliable and sustainable electricity for homes, businesses, and industries.
”The reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu are beginning to take root, and Nigerians will soon witness the full benefits,” the minister said.
According to him, sustained public trust and cooperation are critical to the success of the administration’s reform agenda.
He said the president was actively repositioning Nigeria on the global stage to attract investment and foster development.
Progress on Legacy Debts
However, Energy sector stakeholders, including the Association of Power Generation Companies (GenCos) and various gas producers, have commended President Bola Tinubu for his administration’s commitment to clearing longstanding financial obligations that have historically stifled investment.
Meanwhile, following a rigorous audit that streamlined claims from ₦6.5 trillion down to a verifiable ₦2.8 trillion, the Federal Government released ₦501 billion in January 2026 as an initial installment.
As a matter of fact, The National Economic Council (NEC) recently approved an additional ₦185 billion to be settled through a royalty-offset arrangement, aimed at restoring the confidence of both domestic and international suppliers.
Suppliers noted that these payments are a “major catalyst” for stabilizing the energy value chain and allowing companies to settle their own obligations to banks and technical service providers.
Despite the fiscal progress, the national grid is currently grappling with a significant drop in generation due to an outage on the Trans Forcados Pipeline (TFP).
The outage is attributed to ongoing repairs and scheduled maintenance on the critical infrastructure, which serves as a primary artery for both crude oil evacuation and associated gas supply.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) reported that gas supply to thermal power plants has dropped to approximately 692 million standard cubic feet per day—less than 43% of the required 1,629.75 mmscf/d for optimal operations.
While the outage has caused widespread blackouts, technical teams from the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC) are working to complete repairs. A gradual recovery of electricity output is expected as plants begin ramping up operations following the restoration of gas pressure.
Government officials and industry leaders maintain that while technical disruptions like the Forcados outage are a setback, the resolution of legacy debts remains the most vital step toward ensuring long-term energy security under the Decade of Gas Initiative.
Also,the Minister in his Eid-el-Fitr message made available by Mr Bolaji Tunji, his Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations, assured that the president was actively getting something in the right position for the nation, on the global stage to attract investment and foster development.
“As we celebrate, we take pride in the strides being made under Mr President’s leadership, including his recent engagements in the United Kingdom, which promise significant gains in investment, bilateral relations, and economic cooperation.
”These milestones underscore a new direction for our nation. I urge all Nigerians to continue supporting these efforts, so that the gains can be consolidated for the benefit of all,” he said.
The minister said that through continued personal and national sacrifice, the transformative agenda of President Tinubu would increasingly translate into tangible progress across key sectors of the economy.
